Permanent vs Rented

Why SEO specialists choose permanent links

Rented links stop working the moment you stop paying. Permanent links compound value over time — like owning vs renting an asset.

Permanent backlinks

  • One-time payment — no monthly fees ever
  • Link equity compounds over time as the donor domain ages
  • Survive algorithm updates — we've been doing this since 2004
  • Improve domain authority permanently
  • Natural anchor diversity and contextual placement

Rented links

  • Monthly payments forever — stop paying, lose the links
  • Rankings drop immediately when the rental expires
  • Network footprints — easily identified by Google
  • Costs grow as you scale, ROI shrinks
  • Often bulk-placed with identical patterns

The math on 50 links/year

A typical rented link costs $15–30/month. Over 12 months that's $180–360 per link — for something you don't own. Our permanent links start at $2 per link. One payment. Yours forever.

50 rented links × $20/mo × 12 months$12,000/yr
50 permanent links (one-time)$300–600
You save$11,400+

Quality control

How we select donors — our Ahrefs checklist

Every site goes through a 6-point check before we place a single link. No exceptions.

Domain Rating (DR)

Minimum DR 40 for standard packages. Premium placements from DR 60+. Checked live in Ahrefs on the day of placement.

DR 40–90 range

Organic traffic

Donors must have real, stable organic traffic from Google. Sites with zero traffic pass no link equity — we skip them.

Min 1,000 visits/mo

Spam score

Moz Spam Score below 10%. Sites with toxic link profiles, sudden traffic spikes or recent penalties are rejected automatically.

SS < 10%

Google indexation

We verify the target page is indexed in Google before placement. An unindexed page passes no value regardless of domain metrics.

Indexed ✓

Niche relevance

Links from topically relevant sites carry more weight. For niche campaigns we prioritize thematic match over raw DR.

How to tell a good backlink from a bad one

Not all links are equal. One quality link from a DR 70 site with real traffic can outperform 500 links from dead domains. Here's how professionals evaluate every link before it touches their site.

Signs of a quality link

DR 40+ with real organic traffic
A site with DR 60 and 10,000 monthly organic visitors passes genuine authority. DR alone means nothing without traffic — a DR 70 site with zero organic visitors is a dead donor.
Topically relevant surrounding content
A link from an article about digital marketing pointing to an SEO agency carries far more weight than the same link buried in an unrelated lifestyle blog. Relevance multiplies link value.
Stable traffic history (no sudden spikes)
Check the Ahrefs traffic graph. Stable gradual growth = real site. A spike from 0 to 50,000 overnight followed by a drop = manipulated traffic, likely flagged by Google already.
Dofollow with natural anchor text
Dofollow passes PageRank. Anchor text should look natural — branded ("Trust SEO"), URL-based, or partial match. Exact match anchors on every link is a pattern Google penalizes.
Spam score below 10% (Moz)
High spam score means the domain has received links from known toxic sources. Those negative associations transfer to your site when they link to you.

Red flags — avoid these donors

High DR, zero traffic
DR can be inflated through link schemes. A site with DR 65 and 0 organic visitors got its DR from other manipulated sites. Google ignores these — and so should you.
Outbound links to hundreds of unrelated sites
Link farm signal. If a page links to payday loans, online casino, pharma AND your SaaS tool in the same article — Google recognizes the pattern and devalues all those links.
Traffic drop in last 6 months
A site that lost 80% of its organic traffic likely got hit by an algorithm update. Links from penalized sites carry negative weight and can drag your rankings down with them.
Recently expired and re-registered domain
Old domains are bought, quickly stuffed with links, and sold as "aged domains with DR." Check Wayback Machine — if the content changed completely in the last year, walk away.
Exact match anchor on every link
If every link to your site uses the exact keyword as anchor, Google sees manipulation. Natural link profiles have varied anchors — brand, URL, generic ("click here"), partial match.
Quick donor checklist — run this before every placement

Every Trust SEO placement passes all 8 checks before we proceed. You receive the Ahrefs data for each donor in your delivery report.

How we find and verify donors — tools we use

Ahrefs

Our primary selection tool. We check DR, organic traffic volume and trend, referring domain count, and anchor distribution. Any donor with zero traffic or a sharp traffic drop in the last 6 months is immediately disqualified.

Majestic

Used as a second verification layer. We look for Trust Flow > 20 and a TF/CF ratio close to 1 — a strong signal of a natural link profile built over time rather than inflated through link schemes.

SEMrush

We verify Authority Score and search visibility history. Consistent keyword growth in top-10 positions confirms an active, healthy donor. We also use SEMrush's Toxicity Score to screen out domains with a toxic backlink history.

Every donor is cross-checked across all three tools. Only sites showing stable metrics in all three databases make it into our placement pool.

The real difference

What actually happens when rented links are turned off

Most SEOs learn this the hard way. Here's what the data looks like — and why it matters more than people think.

Rented links work exactly like rented office space. The moment you stop paying — the landlord changes the locks. Your rankings don't gradually decline. They drop sharply, because Google's index is updated continuously and the link signals disappear almost immediately once the placements are removed.

We've seen sites go from page 1 to page 4 in under 3 weeks after stopping a rental campaign. Clients who had built their entire link strategy on rented placements had to restart from zero — and pay again for the same ground they'd already covered.

Permanent links work in the opposite direction. Because the donor domain continues to age and gain authority over time, a link placed today on a DR 50 site could be sitting on a DR 65 site in 18 months — passing more value than when you placed it. You paid once. The ROI compounds.

Rented links — timeline
Month 1–3Rankings improve. Looks good.
Month 6Budget cut. Rental campaign paused.
Month 7Links disappear from the web.
Month 8Rankings drop back to starting point.
Month 9+Start paying again for same results.
Permanent links — timeline
Month 1–2Links indexed. Signals registered.
Month 3–6Rankings improve consistently.
Month 12Donors aged. Links pass more value.
Month 18+ROI compounds. Zero additional cost.
Year 3+Still ranking. Still paying nothing.
Results

What quality permanent backlinks actually deliver

These are the outcomes our clients see across 20+ years of manual link building campaigns — across niches from e-commerce to betting to SaaS.

+40–80%
Organic traffic growth

Typical traffic increase within 3–6 months for sites with 20–50 quality permanent placements in competitive niches.

2–4 wks
First ranking movement

After indexation of new placements. Competitive keywords take longer — long-tail positions move first.

5–10×
ROI vs rented links

Over a 3-year horizon, permanent links cost 5–10× less than maintaining equivalent rented placements while delivering compounding value.

What results look like by niche
Niche Links needed Timeline Typical outcome
Local SEO (service businesses) 10–20 4–8 weeks Top 3 local pack
E-commerce (mid-competition) 30–60 2–4 months Page 1 category pages
SaaS / software 40–80 3–5 months Top 5 for main keywords
Betting / gambling 80–150+ 4–8 months Competitive top 10
Crypto / finance 60–120 4–6 months YMYL top positions

These are approximate ranges. Competition, current domain authority and technical SEO baseline all affect timelines. We assess every campaign individually before committing to estimates.

Real case: We helped recover a betting site from a SpamBrain filter using a targeted permanent backlink campaign combined with content rewriting. Organic clicks went from 0–3/day to 4–12/day within 30 days. Niche: YMYL (betting) — one of the hardest for Google quality signals. The content + links combination is what moved the needle.

FAQ

Questions about permanent backlinks

Permanent backlinks are dofollow links placed on third-party sites with a one-time payment — no monthly fees. Unlike rented links, they stay live indefinitely and continue passing link equity for years. You pay once, you rank forever.

Every donor is checked manually in Ahrefs: DR, organic traffic, spam score, indexation status, niche relevance, and link profile history. We reject sites with toxic links, sudden traffic spikes or recent penalties. You see every metric in the delivery report.

Initial ranking movement is typically visible within 2–4 weeks after indexation. Full impact builds over 3–6 months and compounds as donor domains continue to age. Permanent links get stronger over time — rented links don't.

Manual placement on real sites with natural surrounding content is the safest link building method available. We use varied anchors, diversify placement formats and avoid footprint patterns. We've been doing this since 2004 — we know what triggers penalties and how to avoid them.

Permanent backlinks are placed on established sites (blogs, media, niche resources) with high DR and real traffic — they pass strong authority. Crowd links are forum and community placements that build natural diversity and behavioral signals. The most effective strategy uses both together.
